In Switzerland, giant blankets are being actively sewn to protect glaciers.

This summer, Swiss workers worked in an emergency mode, trying to prevent further melting of glaciers on Mount Titlis. The authorities admit that they have missed several years, they should have started much earlier. For 5-6 weeks, almost 100,000 square meters of fleece blankets were laid here to cover the most vulnerable parts of the glacier with them.
Mount Titlis and its ice and snow wealth is one of the objects of pride and economic stability of Switzerland. It is here that the highest suspension bridge in Europe is located, the most popular ski resorts operate. Previously, the Swiss claimed that snow does not melt on Titlis even in the hottest summer, which ensured the tourist attractiveness of this place.
Alas, in the last decade, the main glacier of Titlis has sharply decreased in size. There are still 1,500 small glaciers on the mountain and in its vicinity, but if the climate continues to warm up, nothing will remain of them by the end of the century. Fans of skiing will literally have to look for snow in the mountains, which will put an end to this industry. Blankets are not a panacea, but no other option has been proposed yet. The white fleece fabric reflects the sun’s rays and creates insulation for ice, significantly slowing its melting.
