The first unmanned train has been launched in Germany
Earlier this week, Hamburg hosted the presentation of the world’s first autonomous passenger train – a joint development of the railway operator Deutsche Bahn and Siemens.
Thanks to this project, the city authorities intend to modernize the Hamburg high-speed railway network, which has already spent 60 million euros. According to the project managers, the new train is much more energy efficient and follows the schedule more accurately.
The city’s railway network will be replenished by 4 trains, which will start running from December, using the existing transport infrastructure.Perhaps the statement about the “world’s first unmanned passenger train” is somewhat exaggerated – several autonomous trains serve the Paris metro lines, and unmanned monorail trains also deliver passengers to the terminals of several European airports.
However, despite digital technologies, artificial intelligence and full automation, the operation of the train will still be controlled by a “live” driver in case of an emergency – at least in the near future.
