Marty McFly’s hoverboard sold at auction for half a million dollars
At the Propstore auction on November 11, 2021, an unusual lot was sold – the legendary hoverboard, on which the hero of the Back to the Future trilogy Marty McFly flew. With an expected price in the region of $ 100 thousand, the movie props went under the hammer for an impressive $501,188. Thus, the hoverboard became the second most expensive item from the world of cinema after the phaser rifle from the Star Trek series.
People have been dreaming about hoverboards for three decades, ever since director Robert Zemeckis mentioned that real technology was shot in films. Many were so impressed by what they saw on the screen that they seriously believed in their existence and were preparing to buy hoverboards as soon as they went on sale. This did not happen, allegedly due to security issues, but faith and expectations have not disappeared anywhere. Moreover, it was Marty’s toy that inspired many inventors to build real hoverboards.
The props sold at auction cannot fly, but they are decorated with autographs of Zemeckis and actor Michael J. Fox, and already has a certain historical and cultural value. Hence such a price tag – the first board was sold for only $ 40 thousand, the second copy in 2018 already for $ 102 thousand, and the current half a million became a record amount. People are willing to pay for a dream.
