In the USA, they began to treat chronic pain with the help of virtual reality
The company AppliedVR has received official permission from the state regulator to launch the EaseVRx device for sale in the USA. This is a virtual reality system that is designed to treat chronic lower back pain. It belongs to a new segment of digital therapeutic agents and is extremely popular with American doctors, as it allows them to abandon addictive opioid-based painkillers.
The EaseVRx method of treating back pain is based on teaching patients special breathing exercises, which in itself is not a discovery. The novelty here is in the way of learning, which is based on a series of exercises in virtual reality. The engineers of AppliedVR have developed a mask that captures the sounds of human breathing using a microphone. Their analysis in real time helps to correct lessons, which greatly simplifies the development of the methodology.
The technology was officially introduced just a year ago, but has already shown very high efficiency – two-thirds of the subjects reported a 30% reduction in pain, and 46% said that the pain was twice as weak. No side effects were detected for the whole year, which was the reason for the quick approval from the regulator. They do not hide that they would like to see much more types of therapy that will allow them to give up pills, especially for chronic patients. And digital technologies can become a new breakthrough in this area.
