A quaint Swedish hotel on a tree will surround guests with feathered friends

The architectural company Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has already implemented a lot of interesting designs, but their new project will be one of the most unusual in recent times. Looking like a huge pine cone among the trees, the Biosphere Hotel will consist of a miniature hotel room in the style of a tree house, outside of which 350 birdhouses will be located. “Biosphere” is being created for the Treehotel project in Swedish Lapland. The BIG plan was developed in collaboration with Treehotel organizers and ornithologist Ulf Oman.
A secluded shelter from the hustle and bustle will be built above the ground with support on the trunks of local pine trees in a forest remote from the city, the approach to the house will be equipped with a suspension bridge. The room will have a glazed facade, complemented by a variety of wooden birdhouses of different shapes and sizes, carefully selected for various birds. The interior on an area of 34 sq.m will be made with Scandinavian taste in calm tones and complemented with thoughtful compact furniture. On the ground floor there will be a sofa and a hammock chair, a bathroom and a kitchenette, and a staircase will lead to the bedroom on the mezzanine.
During the design process, the architects faced a potential problem — whether all these birds would create a huge amount of litter around the house. But after consulting with Ulf Oman from the Ornithological Association of Norrbotten, the team was relieved to learn that birds do not defecate where they nest, so there is hope that the glass of the house will remain transparent.
The “Biosphere” is promised to be completed and opened for guests at the end of 2022. It is still unknown how much it will cost to stay in it.
