South Korea will have the world’s first floating city.
Fears of global sea level rise are gaining momentum, so the idea of building climate-resistant cities on the water is becoming increasingly popular. UN-Habitat, Bjarke Ingels Group, SAMOO (Samsung Group), Oceanix and other companies have joined forces to build the first floating city in South Korea.
The plan was presented back in 2019, but it has only evolved since then. The project was named Oceanix Busan because of its planned location off the coast of South Korean Busan. These will be three huge floating platforms connected to the mainland, where residential buildings, public spaces with restaurants and scientific zones will be located. However, the project can be expanded to 20 islands with much larger capacity. The start of the project is scheduled for 2023. Oceanix guarantees that the first stage of construction will be completed by 2027
